Gumdiggers is located in one of Birkenhead's most historic buildings. Originally the building was a drapers shop on a very busy road that was just a clay and gravel strip leading down to the Birkenhead Wharf. The original builders must have had an eye for appearance and wanted to give the right impression about their business.

Gumdiggers has been well maintained in as close to its original appearance as the practicalities of running a modern restaurant allow. This is reflected in the theme for our decor.

Gumdiggers is tastefully decorated in traditional colours. Dark green walls set off the extensive use of oiled Kauri panels lined with photographs of old gum diggings and early Birkenhead. Our stained glass window is an absolute stunner.

Gumdiggers has until quite recently observed one tradition with the use of old fashioned oil lanterns to illuminate the restaurant. Unfortunately modern thinking prevents us from using these lamps on a daily basis now [how can we have oil lamps going but ban smoking we were continually asked] but we can light them when you book for that special occasion providing yours is the only party in the restaurant that day or night. We alter our seating arrangements to get the best for you and your group on the night and set tables for individuals and groups of almost any size.

We have three times been awarded by the North Shore City as a top five restaurant for observance and application of food and hygiene laws.

Gumdiggers ongoing popularity has been due to a down to earth attitude and determination to offer value for money. A fact that is reflected in the high proportion of return bookings made. We have a style that has a strong following and do not follow 'trends' particularly those insisted upon by restaurant critics from the media who seldom actually seem to have any understanding of food in the real world

This quiet little restaurant serves delicious food at a reasonable price. The building is beautiful with old pictures and Kauri walls which make a lovely setting. The service was a bit slow but the food was delicious.
