Bellota (pronounced bey-otta) is the Spanish word for acorn, and it's the acorn that plays an essential part in the creation of one of the world's most prized delicacies 'Jamon Iberico de bellota' (literally Iberian ham of acorns).
The Iberian pig used to live all over Spain, Portugal and many parts of the Mediterranean, but due to the decline in its natural habitat the dehesa (oak forests), they are scarce - and needless to say - incredibly expensive. They're also very smart pigs.
Chef Peter Gordon invites you to have as authentic a tapas experience as you'll find in Auckland - with a few additional ingredients from other Mediterranean countries and NZ to provide you with an extensive menu.
Bellota's Front of House is led by the bubbly Brazilian's Marcia Hebling and bar supervisor Fabiana Fernandes - supported by the entire Bellota team.

Absolutely love it at Bellotta! Low lighting and good food makes it a very romantic setting. The plates are just the right size and being able to try all sorts of different flavours really made for an enjoyable evening. Have tried going back twice now but very busy and VERY popular

Visited Bellotta last week (mid august) have to say this place is a gem - such a strange location though. Kinda hidden between multi storey carpark entrances on a fairly dead street but step inside and you're in another world. This is no 'spanish themed' bar it's the real deal. Fantastic selection of Spanish wines, incredible - although a little pricey tapas - the deep fried goats cheese with honey and almond flakes ($10 for 2 pieces) is unforgettable. I sense that the crowd were regulars - happily enjoying their 'best kept secret'. Real Spanish guitarist and impressive flame thrower (well actually outdoor heating) add to the atmosphere. A great place to start a night out and an unique central city hideaway. Cosy booth seating but agree with previous reviews - the low hanging table lamps were head butted regularly.
