Executive chef, Makoto Tokuyama produces a "new style" Japanese cuisine. Having finished his training at the world renowned "Ubon by Nobu" in London, Makoto is in his element here working with the plentiful, high quality ingredients available locally. Sauces and dressings are an integral aspect of the menu. The citrus & vinegar based reductions may take weeks to infuse before serving.
Traditional methods and procedures of cookery are followed by an all Japanese trained staff at Soto.
Only Japanese imported ingredients and local, regionally sourced food items are used.You can expect only the freshest ingredients in Soto every day.
Soto operates three menus: a traditional platter style, light luncheon menu, an extensive a la carte dinner menu, representing a range of different Japanese cooking styles; and a takeaway menu for lunch and early dinner to the local neighbourhood.

I am actually surprised by the number of positive reviews for this restaurant. I love Japanese food and pride myself in having dined at most of the more highly recommended places. In my mind, Soto would struggle to make my top 5 Japanese restaurants, let alone Metro Best Asian. The food was above average, the service average. I've been three times in the past with three different parties, and every time we have only just been satisfied. The last time we went, we had a group of about 0, but were not allowed to order a la carte... We were made to order set menus, which I was not impressed with. I could not recommend someone go to this restaurant as I find it overpriced and overrated. There are better options out there.

Soto Japanese Restaurant in Ponsonby is one of the best Japanese restaurants I have visited in Auckland. We've been here approx 6 times in last year - everytime has been excellent. Very creative dishes, excellent service, good wine list. A must try ...

Soto is definitely one of my favourite restaurants - and my husband's too! We have celebrated here many times & the food is always exquisite with the most divine presentation. They have an excellent sake selection too. Highly recommend.
