Located on the corner of Shortland & O'Connell Streets in central Auckland, O'Connell Street Bistro is a small intimate dining room of twelve tables, created in the theme of a modern European back street bistro, with a cosy & well stocked bar.
A recent addition to O'Connell Street Bistro is a private dining room adjacent to the Bistro, the Corner Room, which can accommodate up to twenty eight people.
In its fourteen years of operation, it has been recommended by many publications & won "Best Wine Experience" two years running in the 2007 & 2008 Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year Awards.
The restaurant has also been awarded an Award of Excellence by the prestigious New York wine magazine, Wine Spectator, for the last eleven years running, and joins only nine other restaurants in New Zealand to be recognised by this award. O'Connell Street Bistro is currently the only restaurant in central Auckland with this award.
In April 2007 the Bistro was named by Vanity Fair on Travel magazine as one of 42 top dining spots around the world & was the only restaurant in New Zealand featured.
Most recently, the Bistro was awarded "Best Service " in the Metro Magazine Restaurant of the Year Awards 2009 & "Best Wine Experience" in the 2008 Cuisine NZ Restaurant of the Year Awards.
The Bistro's proprietor, Chris Upton, trained in the UK, and also spent four years on board QE2. His Head Chef, Stephen Ward is NZ trained, and has previously returned from London where he worked at Terence Conran's Bluebird restaurant. Stephen has been with the Bistro since November 2000.
O'Connell Street Bistro is open for lunch Monday to Friday 11.30am to 3pm, and for dinner Monday to Saturday from 5.30pm until late.

Always reliably excellent! I love going to O'Connell St - it is classy, has stunning food - always - and an exceptionally good wine list. Food quality and range of options is excellent.

A really good all round experience. O'Connells has a nice ambiance. The food was top quality, however it took quite some time between courses, more than to be expected. Service could have been coordinated a little better. Having ordered a bottle of wine and a glass of wine the member of our party who ordered the glass was left waiting quite sometime after the bottle had arrived. This didn't detract from the what I would say is a little gem in the heart of Auckland.

We dined at O'Connell Street Bistro and Bar on Saturday 9th October before going to the theatre. The stentorian tones of the waiter who took our order were more reminescent of a parade ground than a restaurant and I automatically sat at attention. She had asparagus that was very nice and then tuna which was also very good. However two hours after eating it she had to leave the theatre several times with violent stomach pains. I had Tortellini that was supposedly stuffed with prawns and spices but were that lacking in taste that I had to ask a waiter what was in them. I had chocolate pot as a dessert and that was excellent but in such a small amount that you could almost have inhaled it. All in all. it was not a great culinary experience and left us with no desire to return. Ceramicist
