We recently and had the pleasure to try the new tapa's style menu, they don't do main's anymore. While skeptical at first, we loved the new approach and paired numerous platters with a range of fantastic wines. Loved the food and wine and the atmosphere was great. Recommended for those you like a less traditional dinning experience.

We hadn't been to Winehot for a few months and recently heard it had reopened after a refurb so we were keen to go again. We used to love Winehot's lovely simple but beautifully executed French-ish bistro food, neat restaurant-cum-wine bar feel and the all-round excellence of the staff. Well, we got a post-refurb shock when we popped in for dinner last night! Gone was the food, gone were the comfortable tables and chairs and gone were the lovely staff. Although the chic-gothic style remains in the form of its chandeliers, dark walls and soft lighting, Winehot has been refashioned into a rather disappointing and all-too-familiar Auckland bar, with tall tables and stools and benches that are hard to ascend and even harder to sit at comfortably, with your legs dangling and table solidly planted about 15 cm further away from you than it should be. The elegant yet honest food has been replaced with a peculiar take on bar food - apparently French 'tapas', which the overly enthusiastic staff member pointed out it wasn't really, since 'tapas is Italian'! A cheese plate, salami plate an assortment of terrines and pates and french stick. Obscurely present, and desperately trying to escape, at the bottom of the 'menu' we found a beef burger and fries for the princely sum of $28. We ordered a mixed cheese and salami plate, a duck pate and duck terrine, which arrived served on bread boards that immediately filled the entire table. The cheese plate was described just as that - no indication was given of the types of cheese that we could expect to find there, something that we would definitely have expected from Winehot previously. While there was little to fault with the actual food (apart from the clearly (under)par-baked french stick that was far too hard and impossible to therefore cut or even tear properly), it was not served with anything other than standard bread and butter knives, which made getting the food from the boards to our mouths very awkward. At the end of the experience, we, our clothes and the table and stools were covered in bread crumbs, and, as we had given up working on getting the antipasto on to the - by this stage, shredded and particulate - bread, we were unsatisfied and still hungry, which is how we left Winehot. My partner and I understand why the owners may have wished to change from being an all-things-to-all-people wine bar/bistro, but are at a loss as to why they have tried to extricate everything that was previously so wonderful about the place and turn it into what is effectively a standard, 'trendy' - and thus rather average - kiwi bar with that common lackadaisical attitude to food and quality service. We will not be returning.

Atmosphere is cool and simple (everything is painted black) Food was very good but not outstanding. Wine list was great. One carafe and two glasses of wine, two mains, one entree platter $200! About a hundred too much for morningside. Skip dinner, perfect for a glass of wine and a chat.

Very cool place. It's like a wine cafe. Not loud like a pub nor formal like a restaurant, hence nice to catch up with people, although I haven't tried any food. But the atmosphere is definitely cozy.

Cool little place that you wouldn't know was there. Very 'rustic' decor that makes you feel like your dining out somewhere in Europe. Excellent wine and wine glasses! Tasting platters were very nice. Bit on the pricey side...but worth it.

My partner took me to Winehot for my birthday. I loved it - everything from the very cool fit-out to the relaxed atmosphere and delicious French food. As the name suggests the wine list was amazing and lived up to its reputation. Would be a great place to go for a night out with the girls.

Winehot is a little gem of a place hidden away in Morningside. Winehot is one of our favourite places in Auckland. The wine is excellent, there is always something new to try, the food is superb. Simple yet very good quality (love the Charcuterie platter) and the service is always friendly and knowledgeable. And best of all, on a rainy winter night you can pretend you are in Paris. Love this place it's no wonder they come up time and time again in Metro. Sante!
