Toby's Kitchen Titirangi
"I recently booked a table for four at Toby's restaurant. I've been there several times over the years, with varying degrees of satisfaction with both the food and the service. Toby's is in a fabulous situation in Titirangi, and is especially appealing to me as a local. It has the potential to be very successful with some organisation and professional management. However yet again, this has let the restaurant down, despite having a new owner. Our group met in the small bar attached to the restaurant, and our experience there was a sign of the evening to come; our partners' beers were not adequately chilled, almost warm, and there was no fresh lime or even lemon for the ladies' drinks. After our pre dinner drinks, we went through to the restaurant and were seated by a waitress, who quickly disappeared without offering water, a wine list or menu. Without any distraction, even in the form of a glass of water, we had plenty of time to note the tacky white paper on top of the table cloths. When we could get service, it was very friendly, but was disorganised, uninformed (wait staff should know if a main menu item is unavailable) and painfully amateur. On the way to our table with our long awaited wine, we watched the waitress stop to serve two patrons wishing to settle their accounts. This took around 10 minutes, including a nice chat with one client and her two young children. She could easily have delivered the wine, opened it and then taken care of the till, all in around 11 minutes. The one extra minute would have made for three happy sets of clients, instead of two happy and one distinctly unhappy. When we finally had menus, and managed to gain the attention of staff, one person had two entree choices unavailable, so gave up. And another also had to make a second choice, and chose the marinated olives; when it eventually arrived, they received four small pieces of bread and six olives! Please!! I realise this is an entree, but it barely classified as an appetiser. One of our party was a smoker, and adjourned to the designated smoking area twice during the course of the evening. On his second visit there, he was told by a group of people sitting outside on the deck that he wasn't welcome as this is a private function. On returning through the bar, he did manage to locate a small, handwritten note saying "private function". Surely booking a normally public designated area for a private function is somewhat lacking in forethought, plus some adequate signage would have saved more than one person some embarrassment. Titirangi is a diverse part of Auckland, and has many residents who would be delighted to have a choice of enjoyable dining experiences close to home. Come on Toby's; you should be running a classy restaurant, not a school cafeteria. I'd love to be a regular."

We went to Toby's for Valentines day, and to our pleasant surprise, they had a delicious carefully selected set menu for the occaision! We chose a cozy table near the fireplace, and were offered a complementary glass of bubbles by a lovely young waitress. The live music was wonderful (I am guessing it was for valentine's day), and our waitress was extremely polite and friendly but above all attentive (never once did my husband and I feel uncared for). There was a slight delay with the food, but our waitress came over and appologised - how could we get angry with someone with a face like hers! When it arrived it was amazing both in presentation and taste! I would definitely return!

Nice mezze platter, but all other food pricy and unexiting. Unfortunately we encountered a less than polite waitress who persistently rushed us into ordering a next course before we were ready to. We succumbed to the pressure, which made it a strangely short sitting for a three-course meal. We will not return.
