The Occidental Hotel was opened on 2nd July 1870 by American sailor Edward Perkins, and became renowned as one of Auckland's finest hotels. In 1999 the historic building was transformed into the first authentic Belgian Beer Cafe in the Southern Hemisphere.
We proudly serve authentic Belgian cuisine complimented by an extensive selection of fine Belgian beers and some of the best wines from NZ & Australia. We recommend you try our signature steaming mussel pots, or our famous mussel platters (our full menu & drinks list can be viewed on the Food & Bar pages).

Great menu, lovely food but very uncomfortable wooden benches! Service was a bit slow - think the waiter was new! Fish dishes are always very good.

We were walking on Queen St. and came accross Vulcan Lane. We stopped at The Occidental Belgian Beer Cafe. The ambiance was great, the mussles where enormous and gooood!!! Before leaving New Zealand, we flew from Christchurch to Auckland and we decided to have lunch again at that place. The fish and chips was good and so was the calamaries.
