2012 Metro Top 50 Restaurant
Eight . Two is another good local bistro that knows its neighbourhood and looks after it well. There's a big and very well-chosen list of wines available by the glass and the service, in the hands of proprietor Lindsay Swannack, is engaging and attentive. The menu contains many standards , but there are many pleasingly individual touches and that extends right through to the sides.
One of our judges commented that every dish came from the kitchen perfectly seasoned. That's rare.

Hollowed out of an old villa, this dazzlingly white dining room offers a modern menu and a great wine list. Catch the Birkenhead ferry from the city for a memorable night out.

A villa restaurant proves meticulous in its attention to detail and its customers.
At most New Zealand restaurants with any pretensions to excellence you can take the standard of the main components for granted. What sets the better examples apart is often the trimmings and a balance of the various elements in a dish. This thought came to mind at Eight Point Two, a well-established and well-praised Birkenhead institution.
The service is intelligent , knowledgeable about what they are serving and marked by a diligence in ensuring everything is delivered as and when you want it.
Verdict: Every neighbourhood should have a restaurant as welcoming and proficient as this one, blending informality and style in an appealing way.

Birkenhead's hidden gem. This restaurant is all class in a villa style atmosphere. A refreshing and playful cocktail list followed by 5 star food cooked to perfection. I had the duck leg confit which was divine. great service and class. Dine here if you want to impress

Lindsay and the team always make you feel welcome and special. Superb food and a good understanding of which wines work well with each meal. Well worth the visit and we'll be back!

Excellent service, and very polite staff. The setting was beautiful eventhough it's minimalistic, we sat outside in the back and the breeze was not strong and was very pleasant. I ordered the duck and was pleasantly surprised by it's flavour and presentation. Food was hot, ingredients were fresh and expectations were fulfilled. Top notch! I had a lemon, lime bitters heavy on the bitters, the drink was nice and cold but did not follow through with the heavy on the bitters. Will definitely revisit this restaurant!
