This place really does blow hot and cold - I have had some awful meals here - John57's review I could have written myself a few months ago. But something seems to have changed - as I went there last week and things have improved out of sight (foodwise). The chicken salad was huge, fresh, and tasty. The steak sandwich was about twice the size this time it was when I had ordered it a few months ago, and the steak quality was much improved. Lunches are around the $13 mark which is outstanding value for money. If you have tried this place and been disappointed, I encourage you to try again - you might be pleasantly surprised at how much it has improved. Really hoping this is a permanant improvements, not just someone else in the kitchen that particular day!

We went to the pub "Highflyers", in The Square, Palmerston North for a few drinks. The service from the bar person was shocking and he looked and acted as if he didn't want to be there. It was a huge effort for him to serve us. We then made the mistake of ordering something to eat. I ordered chicken breast strips and my mate ordered rib eye steak sandwich. Both meals were absolutely terrible. The chicken strips looked like processed meat of some kind and certainly didn't taste like breast chicken. The steak was cut that thin that you could almost see through it and it was more like schnitzel but alot thinner. The chips were soggy and the salad was not fresh and looked and tasted about 3 days old. Both meals were cold. We complained to the waitress and she went and told the chef. She came back and said that we could go into the kitchen and look at the meat. We declined. The toilets in this establishment are absolutely disgusting. They are not clean and have a horrible stench when you go in there. Some patrons actually walk across the road to the public toilets. The next day we phoned Jason the Manager and complained. He said his staff had some explaining to do and would get straight back to us. A week later and we have heard nothing!

Highflyers has a really good menu that I thoroughly enjoyed. They have all the usual pub type food, but also have excellent pizza and mexican menus. The pizzas are delicious, and reasonably priced (as is most of the food), and the mexican looks fantastic. They put a lot of effort into the presentation of the mexican food. The only part of the menu that didn't impress was the desserts. The type and number is fairly limited, and somewhat overpriced for what you get. Overall though, well and truly worth a visit!
