Best seafood restaurants in Wellington

Wellington is spoilt for choice when it comes to amazing seafood restaurants.

The capital city is home to some of the best seafood restaurants in New Zealand, serving up fresh fish and shellfish right out of New Zealand waters. High in nutritional value and so tasty, there’s nothing better than a big plate of seafood at a great restaurant.

These are some of our favourite seafood restaurants in Wellington.

Shed 5, Queens Wharf

This iconic seafood restaurant on Queens Wharf boasts a celebrity chef pedigree as well as one of one of Wellington’s most romantic settings. We’re talking, of course, about Shed 5.

Part of celebrity chef Simon Gault’s Nourish Group, Shed 5 has an exciting and innovative menu. The seafood risotto comes highly recommended, as does all its non-seafood dishes like Hawke’s Bay lamb rump.

Fishermans Table, Paekakariki & Oriental Bay

Wellington’s famous Fishermans Table is is a local landmark when it comes to great seafood.

Light on the pretention and heavy on the deliciousness, the Fishermans Table’s in Paekakariki on the Kapiti Coast – are essential dining destinations for all seafood lovers. Both restaurants are in prime locations for a romantic lunch or dinner.

Ortega Fish Shack, Majoribanks St

This trendy Majoribanks Street seafood eatery has been designed to resemble a shabby-chic beach shack – but there is nothing shabby about its food.

Here at the Ortega Fish Shack you’ll find everyday fish ‘n chip shop favourites alongside the likes of jerk salmon, pan-fried prawn tails and big eye tuna sashimi. It’s one of Wellington’s most unique seafood restaurants.

The Crab Shack, Queens Wharf

At the time of writing, The Crab Shack is Wellington’s newest seafood restaurant, a Cape Cod-themed casual eatery that specialises in, you guessed it, crab. Located at the southern end of Shed 5 on Queens Wharf, you can read all about this funky seafood restaurant here.

The White House Restaurant, Oriental Bay

Not a seafood restaurant in the strictest sense, The White House Restaurant nonetheless serves up some immaculate seafood dishes such as pan-roasted market fish, crab raviolo, seared scallops and, when the season is right, bluff oysters.

Martin Bosley’s, Oriental Bay

Another Wellington fine-dining restaurant that does an excellent plate of seafood, Martin Bosley’s menus are jam-packed with kai moana dishes. Highlights include diamond shell clams, green shell mussels, oysters, fish la plancha with squid ink gnocchi and ‘steakhouse fish’ with buttermilk fried onion rings and a béarnaise sauce.
