Now open: The Crown, Auckland

Auckland’s latest microbrewery and gastrobar marks the dawn of a new empire of breweries and eating houses in the City of Sails.

Introducing The Crown, a classy new drinking establishment inside the old hotel on the corner of Customs Street East and Gore Street, which is set to be the first in a chain of Little Empire Brewery and Eating Houses.

It’s an impressive debut. The Crown’s relaxed-yet-upmarket vibe marks itself as a new favourite for discerning beer drinkers, with a stunning menu to complement the pilsners, lagers and pale ales brewed on site.

With an eye for what’s in fashion right now as well as classic gastro fare, The Crown’s menu features sliders and sharing platters alongside the likes of pork spare ribs with smoked ancho chilli, green-lipped mussels and tiger prawns in a tomato saffron broth, and herb rubbed roast chicken with a sage and apricot stuffing.

Uniquely, the mains are served with your choice of spuds and greens. Choices include shoestring fries with house-made ketchup, black truffle potato mash, crown classic coleslaw with buttermilk, pecan and sultana, and char-grilled iceberg wedge with semi-dried tomato and goat’s curd.

The Crown didn’t have any of its own beers ready when Menus.co.nz paid it a visit but, suffice it to say, we’re pleased to have another excuse to visit again in the future.

Made by hand and brewed on site with all-natural local ingredients, The Crown’s micro-brewed beer is expected to be available on tap and in two-litre takeaway bottles late this month. And seasonal varieties will be expected in the future.

We can’t wait to review it – and we’re looking forward to seeing more Little Empire Brewery and Eating Houses popping up around Auckland in the future.
