Recipe: how to make hummus

Everyone loves hummus – it’s healthy, it’s great for sharing and it’s simple and inexpensive to make.

Whether you’re hosting a dinner party or you’ve got some friends visiting, you can whip up a batch of this popular Middle Eastern delicacy in no time at all. It’s as easy to make as traditional Kiwi onion dip; just follow this very easy hummus recipe.

Ingredients

1 can of chickpeas (400g)
2 crushed garlic cloves
Juice of one lemon
1tsp cumin
1tsp paprika
2tbspn tahini
4tbsp olive oil
Salt
Pepper

Method

Drain the chickpeas and put them in a blender. Add the garlic, juice, cumin, tahini and 3tbsp olive oil.

Add less than half a cup of water, then blend for 3-5 minutes or until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed and it starts to look smooth like hummus.

Add salt, pepper and more lemon juice to taste.

Pour it into a bowl and either smooth the top of the hummus or make a well in the middle. Pour the remaining olive oil on top and sprinkle with paprika (parsley is another great option for a garnish).

Presto! Your hummus is best served with warm pita bread but it also goes well with chips, carrot or parsley sticks.
