Best for ice cream in NZ

Ice cream is as much a quintessential part of the New Zealand summer as Black Cap test cricket capitulations – but it’s much easier to stomach.

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream, frozen yoghurt and gelato – so switch off the cricket, stop waiting for Mr Whippy to show up on your street and get yourself a Hokey Pokey, Goody Goody Gum Drops or Orange Choc Chip ice-cream cone.

Better yet, get all three flavours – you can read our guide to the best low-fat dining options later.

Blue Ice Cream Café, Matakana

Whether you’re heading to Matakana for its Saturday farmers market or you’re just passing through on your way to Leigh or Omaha, you must stop at Blue Ice Cream Café for an ice-cold treat. It serves up smoothies, organic ice cream and sorbet made from real fruit.

Plantation Café, Orewa

With so many flavours to choose from, Plantation Café in Orewa is almost as popular with passing motorists as it is with holidaymakers. Grab a cone and head over the road to beautiful Orewa Beach for a walk on the sand or a paddle in the water.

Valentino’s Gelato, Auckland

‘Gelato’ is merely the Italian word for ice cream and yet there is a huge difference in taste. Gelato is often richer and more flavoursome than ice cream, which makes a visit to Valentino’s Gelato in the Auckland Ferry Building a must for dessert lovers.

Yoghurt Story, Auckland

First gelato and now frozen yoghurt? That’s right; Menus.co.nz does not discriminate when it comes to delicious ice-cold summer-time treats. Made with only the best ingredients, Yoghurt Story’s frozen yoghurt is all natural and all delicious. Plus it’s packed with probiotics.

Movenpick, Auckland

The queues outside the door will give this one away in Mission Bay, despite its ice-cream being considerably more expensive than your average TipTop Trumpet. Rotund Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom was recently spotted getting an ice-cream at Movenpick – so you know it must be good.

Giapo, Auckland

A regular fixture on Auckland’s Queen Street for dessert lovers, Giapo (ice cream & research kitchen) approaches the fine art of making gelato like it’s a science, churning out a massive range of innovative and fun flavours – all made with 100% natural ingredients, of course.

Waitete Orchard Restaurant Café & Ice Creamery, Waihi

Waitete Orchard’s ice cream, gelato and sorbet is made on the premises using only natural ingredients. The proof is very much in the pudding, with a great range of delicious-tasting ice creams that will satisfy your taste buds and keep you cool this summer.

Gelissimo Gelato Ice Cream Café, Wellington

Gelissimo in Wellington keeps scooping up (pardon the pun!) awards at New Zealand’s annual Ice Cream Manufacturer’s Association Awards – but we don’t need to be expert judges to tell you that its gelato is very, very good. Plus Gelissimo keeps adding new flavours to the mix to keep it interesting.

Hamish’s Ice Cream Parlour & Café, Tasman

You can’t miss with Hamish’s Ice Cream Parlour & Café in Mapua, just outside of Nelson, with real fruit ice cream and old-fashioned milkshakes – as well as a range of sandwiches and pies if you don’t want to have just ice cream for lunch.

Kohu Road ice cream in New Lynn is amazing! Crafted right there behind the shop, they make ice cream and sorbet like you have never tasted before. And they sell it in 1 litre tubs to take home.

The Kurow general store is THE BEST icecream store I have been to. They have around 20 different flavours, and for the price of a single scoop, they are prepared to put on five different scoops of different flavours if the weary traveller asks politely enough. That is easily the most generous offering I've come accross, and I never fail to stop by Kurow when travelling south; in fact, I deliberately go via the South Canterbury/ North Otago inland route so I can experience the Kurow Store icecream experience!
