The best Auckland parks for barbecues

Nothing puts the sizzle into the classic Kiwi summer like the good old barbecue.

Burnt sausages, fresh fish and huge chunks of steak – all flame-grilled on the humble barbecue; these are the ingredients for a perfect summer barbecue.

And there can be no excuse for not partaking in one of New Zealand’s favourite pastimes with so many Auckland parks providing barbecue facilities. Whether you don’t have a backyard or you’re simply looking to grill somewhere a little bit different – these are our favourite spots for a BBQ.

Awhitu Regional Park

Awhitu Regional Park may indeed be an 80-odd minute drive from central Auckland but it’s well worth the trip. Think beautiful parkland pastures, sandy beaches and not one but four wood-burning BBQs.

One Tree Hill Domain

One Tree Hill Domain and neighbouring Cornwall Park combine to form the largest area of parkland in Auckland City.  You’ll find the barbies in Cornwall Park.

Coyle Park

Coyle Park at Pt Chevalier is a lovely place for a summer BBQ, boasting fantastic harbour views and heaps of space for a spot of cricket with the whanau.

Dove Meyer Robinson Park

Just a short stroll from the heart of Parnell’s bustling restaurant and café scene lays all the tools for a lovely summer barbecue in Dove Meyer Robinson Park.

Wenderholm Regional Park

One of the Auckland region’s most popular parks is also one of its best. Wenderholm is a 35 minute drive from central Auckland and it boasts a number of electric and solid fuel BBQs (bring your own wood or charcoal).

Long Bay Regional Park

This North Shore classic covers three beaches and has a number of electric barbecues as well as wood-burning ones. Plus it’s a great place for a swim in the sea.

Western Springs

Drop by Western Springs’ lake-side park for a BBQ before heading over to the Auckland Zoo or the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT).

Mission Bay

At Selwyn Reserve you’ll find a barbecue, where you’re more likely to burn the meat simply because you’ll be so distracted by the water views.

Outhwait Park

It seems even in Newmarket you’re not far from a great spot to fry up some sausages. Opposite the Auckland Domain you’ll find Outhwait Park, where there is a BBQ, playground and public toilets.

Keith Hay Park

You’ll be able to watch some sport while you BBQ here because it’s one of Auckland’s most popular sports parks.

Muriwai Regional Park

This rugged west coast beach is a 40 minute drive from downtown Auckland. It’s not quite a family-friendly as other beaches around Auckland but there are BBQs on site and you can even bring your own gas one from home.
