The best garden bars in Wellington

Summer is upon us and you know what that means – it’s time to scope out the best garden bars in Wellington.

We’ve taken one for the team and gone and done all the hard work for you, trying out each of these venues to make sure the food is good, the garden bars are in tip-top shape and, most importantly, that the beer is cold.

We now present you with our hard-hitting research into the best Wellington restaurants and bars with out-door space to dine or drink alfresco this summer.

Bellevue Gardens

It sounds more like a hotel than a garden bar – and that’s because it is a hotel with a garden bar.

Bellevue Gardens Restaurant and Hotel has a stunning garden bar, sports bar and bistro. The food is affordable and the beer is ice-cold. It makes for a sweet wedding venue or just a chilled-out place to have a meal or a couple of drinks with your mates.

And look at it this way, if you end up enjoying yourself too much you can always stay the night in the hotel.

The best thing about Matterhorn’s courtyard is it has a retractable roof if the weather goes bad, as it does every now and again in windy Wellington.

It boasts a great sharing menu, too, with more than 28 different plates available – or, if you’re greedy or you don’t like to share, you can have one of them to yourself.

The Hop Garden

The Hop Garden’s funky garden bar is a great place to enjoy craft beer this summer, with the venue having a particular focus on New Zealand microbreweries.

And the food is nothing to be sniffed at either, with an extensive menu ranging from tapas-style small plates to a full a la carte menu in the evening.

Leuven Belgian Beer Cafe

We love Belgian beer at Menus.co.nz, especially in the sun – which is ironic because Belgium doesn’t get a lot of sun.

Nevertheless, Leuven Belgian Beer Café’s courtyard does get a lot of sun. It’s another ideal spot for a spot of beer tasting this summer from the bar’s extensive beer list.

Southern Cross

Finally, no list of Wellington garden bars would be complete without the Southern Cross, arguably Wellington’s most popular beer garden.

There’s always something happening at “The Cross”, whether it be live music or giant jenga – and it’s one of our favourite Wellington bars with board games, too.
