Where to eat on New Year’s Eve

There’s nothing more enjoyable than celebrating New Year’s Eve in fine company and with good food to suit.

Your friends at Menus have found some excellent fine-dining restaurants all over New Zealand that will be serving delicious meals this New Year’s Eve, so you can say farewell to 2012 and a big kia-ora! to 2013 in true style.

Be sure to book ahead though, as these restaurants are sure to book up fast!

As always, Auckland is spoilt for choice when it comes to great restaurants (an observation that prompted one of our columnists to query whether it should really be NZ’s culinary capital instead of Wellington). The flashest of the lot, though, might be Dine by Peter Gordon, which is putting on a special degustation dinner with or without matching wines for $150 or $220 per person respectively.

If you’d prefer a restaurant with a view, The Observatory inside the Auckland Sky Tower is putting on a special New Year’s Eve buffet with complimentary plated entrée. The first sitting is from 5.30-6.30pm; the second is from 8-9pm. It costs $105 per adult and $50 for children 14 years or younger.

The Terrace boasts a five-star buffet dinner with premium views of the Auckland New Year’s Eve fireworks at midnight for $99 per person and Kermadec in the Auckland Viaduct is putting on a five-course set menu with a world-class dessert to finish and a glass of bubbles on arrival for $140 per person.

Aorangi Peak will be doing what it does best on New Year’s Eve – putting on a delectable five-course New Year’s degustation menu for $85 per person. Think roast rack of lamb and a confit of duck, pan-fried terakihi fillet and a strawberry parfait or chocolate delice to finish. Bookings are essential.

Countdown to 2013 and dine in style at The Grill @ Amora, which is offering six courses to delight the senses for just $90 per person. And if you book before 28 December 2012 you will get a complimentary glass of champagne.

Logan Brown, meanwhile, is open for dinner only on New Year’s Eve in Wellington. The first sitting at 5.30pm features a special bistro menu and costs $65 per person; the second, from 8pm, features a special New Year’s Eve tasting menu including Hauraki Gulf bass with cauliflower crème and seven spiced duck with sweet kumara flan for $185 per person.

There are a number of restaurants and bars in Christchurch with special New Year’s Eve events but Pescatore’s classy New Year’s Eve menu at The George hotel is for those who want a little bit of sophistication.

Its menu includes a glass of champagne, ham salad, foie gras parfait, scallop fettuccine, poached little river beef, apple sour, berries and cheese. It costs $135 per person or $195 with matching wines.

Looking for something more relaxed? The Running Bull in Riccarton will have $12 pizzas from 4pm, followed by a whole host of drink specials – including $10 vodka and Red Bulls – from 5pm. Entertainment wise, The Running Bull's resident DJs will be pumping out the beats all night long.

When it comes to fine dining restaurants in Queenstown one name stands out from the crowd: Rata, the passion project of NZ-born celebrity chef Josh Emett.

Gordon Ramsay’s protégé has designed two New Year’s Eve celebration menus that are sure to be your best meal of 2012. The first, available at 5.30pm, is a five-course tasting menu priced at $105 per person and $45 for children; the second is a seven-course tasting menu from 8.30pm that comes with a complimentary glass of champagne and costs $165 per person.

"Hmm...they're so many restaurants to choice for New Year's Eve. I would have to check around Wellington or buck early at Logan Brown.
