Spotlight: Depot Eatery and Oyster Bar

Depot uses three adjectives to describe itself and its food: fast, fun and fresh.

We can think of at least one other: delicious.

Small plates are the order of the day at Depot, a fast-paced eatery and oyster bar by New Zealand celebrity chef Al Brown, with many of the dishes cooked over charcoal or hardwood.

The food isn’t overly pretentious – just flavourful, innovative and perfect for sharing.

The restaurant’s NZ meat board comes highly recommended, as does its hapuka belly with green olive and its milk-fed lamb Yorkshire puddings with feta and baby ghanoush.

But the oyster bar is what Depot is most famous for. Serving only the best fresh, raw oysters and clams, patrons can enjoy Tio Point oysters with a crisp, sweet finish, or oysters from Mahurangi and Orongo Bay – each with their own distinct flavour.

The wine list is small but perfectly formed, served either by the glass or from the tap. You read that correctly; Depot has wine on tap, served straight from the keg.

What makes the restaurant a little bit different from SkyCity’s other offerings in and around Federal Street is it’s a place to drop by and fuel up with friends and family, rather than a restaurant that you book months in advance.

Depot takes no reservations, which also applies to groups, preferring that people simply turn up when they feel like it. But with quick service you shouldn’t have to wait long.

Oh, and we just about to mention one last minute detail: Depot was named the supreme winner at the Metro 2012 Restaurant of the Year Awards so you know it must be good.

Depot will be one of the restaurants at annual foodie festival Taste of Auckland, 15-18 November in Victoria Park.
