If you’re heading to the movies, why not make a night of it? There are loads of fantastic restaurants and bars just a stones throw from your favourite Auckland cinemas, so you can grab a meal, drink or quick snack before or after your film.
For pre-show Mexican food you can’t do better than Mama Loco, a modern bar and restaurant on the exterior of Westfield Albany. Be careful, though – you might have such a good time drinking margaritas and dining on Mexican street-food that you forget about going to see a film altogether.
Sausalito, adjacent to Northcote Point’s famous Bridgeway Cinema, is perfect for a pre-cinema drink or a bite. It is extremely popular with locals, but diners also come from far and wide to tuck into Sausalito’s legendary wood-fired pizzas, so we’d advise you to book ahead.
Less than a minute’s walk from Event Cinemas on Queen Street, Giapo Gelato offers a huge range of delectable Italian gelato and sorbet to sustain you through a hard session of movie watching. If you’re after an exotic sweet treat, then look no further than Giapo Gelato. Some of their more unusual flavour combinations include Chocolate and Blue Cheese Gelato, Wild Rock Sauvignon Blanc Sorbet and Organic Avocado Sorbet.
Just a short distance away is Pizza Pizza. Situated at the top of a flight of steep blue stairs Pizza Pizza overlooks Queen Street and is conveniently positioned for both Event Cinemas and The Academy in Lorne Street. If you’re up for a bite and some great local music before or after your movie, then this is the place.
Brooklyn Bar and Lounge, downstairs from Pizza Pizza brings a slightly rock n’ roll vibe to Queen Street’s theatre district. It’s got an impressive drinks list which includes some enticingly named cocktails. How could you resist the Brooklyn Brawler (Famous Grouse whiskey, dark rum, Jim Beam, brandy, Southern Comfort, ginger ale and L&P) or the Fairy God Father (Galliano, gin, blue curacao liquor, passionfruit, lime and pineapple)?
With its beautiful beach and harbour outlook, Mission Bay Café is a great place to begin or finish off your movie date at the nearby Berkley Cinema. Grab a glass of wine and some tapas and enjoy!
Howick’s Fig & Olive Restaurant is five minutes walk from the recently reopened Monterey Cinema, making it ideal for a pre-movie meal. It offers an authentic taste of the Mediterranean with a menu which combines Greek, Spanish and Portuguese influences.
Safran Café Restaurant, located close to both The Rialto and Event Cinemas, is ideal for a pre-movie meal or snack in Newmarket. Whether it’s a quick espresso or one of their delicious Mediterranean-inspired dishes, Safran won’t disappoint.
