Top Wellington bars

They don't call Wellington the Coolest Little Capital in the World for nothing.

With its vibrant yet laid-back vibe, Wellington has more than its fair share of decent bars where there’s something guaranteed to suit everyone – whether you're looking for a huge night out or just a few beers with your mates.

Here are a few of our favourites.

Pan de Muerto

A great place to start the night out right – with food (eating is definitely not cheating when it's this good!) and tequila. Pan de Muerto Mexican restaurant and tequila bar has recently relocated to 82 Tory Street.

Perfect for a few drinks while watching some sport or as a casual watering hole for catching up with friends and family. Arizona has daily food and drink specials.

The Library

Courtney Place is home to some very niche bars, and The Library bar is indeed one of them. With its quirky boutique feel, it’s a great place to catch live bands and share a cocktail or late evening dessert. Lovely.

The Matterhorn

A bit of a Wellington institution, The Matterhorn in Cuba Street is a wicked place to visit. With a positive atmosphere there are plenty of live gigs always ready to entertain. A guaranteed good night out.

Havana Bar

Head to Wigan Street for a little dose of Havana. Good things come in small packages and, yes, this is a little bar – but it’s got a great vibe about it and offers top notch beers and cocktails. It has a superb outdoor area for warmer days, too.

Southern Cross

Wellington’s ultimate meeting place and watering hole for hundreds of years, the Southern Cross has something for everyone and has a positive down-to-earth attitude. A popular bar with reasonable prices and cool private booths, it also has a massive beer garden with cosy outdoor heaters – and they can even provide hot water bottles if requested.

Hawthorn Lounge

The Hawthorn Lounge may be small but it’s well worth a visit; get there early, grab the cocktail menu and prepare to sip on some of the best cocktails in town. There are smart leather couches and a lovely open fire (if you’re good you might even get to toast marshmallows).

St Johns

Set up in the old 1920’s ambulance building, the St Johns Heineken Hotel, Bar and Restaurant is an excellent place to meet your mates for a catch-up over a beer or two. Its food is excellent and there is always something going on.

Good Luck

Another late night boogie club, the Good Luck bar is a funky downstairs venue serving great drinks in a cosy (and often hot) environment. Good DJs, live acts and the freshest beats will have you partying through until the witching hour. Check it out.

The Shearers Arms

Not so much a bar as a tavern, The Shearers Arms in Paraparaumu Beach has pool tables, TAB sports betting and live bands.

You might also enjoy the best garden bars in Wellington.
