The 2012 Gamebird Food Festival is now on at various restaurants throughout New Zealand until 8th July. The festival celebrates the fine dining and nutritional qualities of gamebirds such as duck, pheasant and quail.
Organised by Fish & Game New Zealand, the festival promotes the value of gamebirds as a desirable, healthy and completely organic foodstuff.
During the festival you can have your gamebird cooked by a top chef in one of New Zealand’s leading restaurants
All you need to do is book a table at one of the participating eateries (listed below) and drop your gamebird off to the chef at least 24 hours before you dine. Remember also to dress your bird, i.e. pluck and gut it, before delivering it to the chef.
You don’t have to be a hunter to enjoy the Gamebird Food Festival. The festival also incorporates cooking demonstrations and special events at participating restaurants. One such event is the Bye Bye Mai Mai five-course degustation dinner being held at Mokoia Restaurant in Rotorua on Saturday 7th July.
Here's a sample of the delights in store for diners at Bye Bye Mai Mai:
• Semi-boneless quail tempura infused with Horopito and Mata beer on Pacific slaw with mango salsa and lotus crisps
• Manuka smoked and roasted Duck Supreme with anise seeds on a bed of miso infused jasmine pilaff
The cost of the five-course Bye Bye Mai Mai degustation dinner is $95 per person. The price includes a wine match with each course. Call Mokoia Restaurant on 07 343 5152 to make a booking. Be sure to get in quick as this event is bound to be popular.
A full list of birds permitted to be harvested, as well as the regulations around hunting gamebirds, is available at Fish & Game New Zealand.
So, for a dining experience with a difference, head along to one of the numerous restaurants taking part in the 2012 Gamebird Food Festival.
When: until Sunday 8th July
Cost: participating restaurants set their own charges for 2012 Gamebird Food Festival dinners and events. Check the cost when you make a booking.
