Whitianga Scallop Festival 2012

When: Saturday 15th September, 10am to 5pm

Where: The Esplanade, Whitianga

Tickets: available June 5, for ticketing information visit Eventfinder

Tickets go on sale next month for one of the Coromandel’s most popular events, the Whitianga Scallop Festival 2012, taking place this year on Saturday 15th September.

A purpose-built village of marquees containing around 60 stalls with fantastic views over Whitianga Harbour will house the festival.

The Whitianga Scallop Festival is a celebration of the scallop and local chefs will pay tribute by cooking and preparing it in a number of ways.

Last year’s festival featured, among other offerings, wood-fired scallop pizza, scallop fritters and scallops served in shot glasses of chardonnay. As well as scallops, there will be a range of other delicious seafood including salmon, paua, lobsters and prawns.

Don’t worry if seafood isn’t to your taste, there will be a range of other food on offer including street food, burgers, kebabs and more.

As well as sampling the very best of seafood-based Coromandel cuisine, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase delicious locally made edibles from the many boutique food makers who will be in attendance. There will be a selection of beers, wines and cider available throughout the event so you can quench your thirst and wash down your purchases.

A highlight of the 2011 festival was the World’s Best Scallop Recipe Competition, which saw finalists cooking live, onstage in front of thousands of people including Masterchef judge Ray McVinnie. The contest, which is open to everyone, was extremely popular and the judges are looking forward to seeing loads of great entries for this year’s event.

Other favourites from 2011 returning this year include the fresh fish auction and celebrity chef cooking demonstrations (the identities of these celebrities will be confirmed closer to the festival date). Plus, there will also be loads of great bands and DJs entertaining throughout the day.

So, if you’re a lover of seafood, great entertainment and good food generally, make sure you head to the Coromandel for the Whitianga Scallop Festival 2012.
