There certainly is no shortage of cafes, bars and restaurants in Auckland’s City Centre – every second building seems to offer you a place to rest your legs and enjoy a bite to eat. But with so much choice available, it can be hard to separate the good from the bad and ugly!
Auckland’s Viaduct area gives you door to door bars and restaurants, each competing with the next for your business. However, be prepared to pay a little bit more for your food in this area as the price tag includes not only the meal but the central location too!
Some places that are worth the money include The Waterfront Café & Bar where you can sit on their deck out the back and enjoy simple but tasty mains such as their Deluxe Cheeseburger or Vegetarian Risotto – both under the $20 mark. If it’s pub grub that you’re after then pop into Danny Doolan's for some comfort food (as well as a pint to wash it down!), they also do a Sunday roast that’ll make you feel like you’re back in your Mum’s kitchen! For special occasions, or times when you’re feeling a little more flush with cash, Kermadec offers fine dining with stunning harbour views. Yeah you’ll pay a little more for your meal here than in most Viaduct eateries but the food, service and views make it well worth it!
Vulcan lane, just off Queen Street is another area that’s great for relaxing over a long lunch and a short drink! Try O’Carrolls and order their seasoned wedges – there’s more than enough for 2 people and a bargain at only $10. Or if it’s a beer menu as long as your arm that you’re looking for then The Occidental Belgian Beer Café will be more than happy to oblige.
Queen Street may be best known for it’s shopping but, venture to the top of it and, tucked away down some steps, you’ll find a hidden gem of a restaurant. Tanuki’s Cave is an iconic Japanese Yaikitori – try their great skewers and even better saki – definitely at the top of our list when it comes to fun food in Auckland.
We all know that fine dining will make a dent in your bank balance, especially in the city centre. However when the food and the service match the price on the bill, we don’t mind splashing out every now and again. The Harbourside Seafood Bar & Grill in Auckland’s historic Ferry Building is one dining experience that’s definitely worth the cost. Their balcony seating offers you views over the harbour and with overhead heating you can enjoy this even on the chilliest of nights. The food and service are top notch and the atmosphere is chatty and intimate at the same time. A great place to get dressed up for!
