Bluff Oyster and Food Festival 2012

The deep south seaport of Bluff celebrates its signature food, the humble oyster, at the Bluff Oyster and Food Festival on 26 May 2012.

The festival is also a celebration of other kinds of seafood such as salmon, scallops, kina, paua and mussels, all of which will be available in abundance. There will also be a large range of wildfood on offer including venison, lamb, the sought after mutton bird, and that reliable staple of the Kiwi barbeque, the good old sausage.

If you’ve never tried classic Kiwi foods like kina or mutton bird, the festival provides a great opportunity to do so. Maori consider kina, or sea urchin, a delicacy and eat it raw, from the shell. You can try it this way at the festival, or by the cup or punnet if you prefer.

Being a Southland food festival, there will naturally be a large selection of local and national beers and wines to wash down the delicious edibles. The distinctly Southern flavour of the event extends to the entertainment too.

The popular “oyster open and eat” competition returns for a second year. Aspiring fashion designers get the chance to demonstrate their creativity in the Oyster Sack Fashion Parade. It has been a festival fixture for many years and is always eagerly anticipated.

When: 10am, 26 May 2012

Where: Bluff waterfront

Tickets: Adults $18, children 12 and under $5. Email Invercargill City Council for tickets or buy them from TicketDirect.
