The gastro-pub is a fairly new phenomenon and is taking the restaurant scene by storm. Now, not only can you go into that much-loved pub and enjoy your favourite tipple, you can get a damn good feed there too!
If you’re in or around the Viaduct, there are an abundance of pubs where you can fill up on good food. Danny Doolan's have a great menu that’ll satisfy you whether you’re ravenous or just a little peckish! Their sister pub, O’Hagans is also great, especially if you’ve got a group. Try one of their platters where you can pick a few of your favourites off the menu and try them all. In Summer, head to The Waterfront Cafe where you can enjoy your pub grub on the terrace while watching the boats go by or, in Winter try Fox's Alehouse where you can plonk yourself in front of their big screen and chow down while watching whatever sport takes your fancy.
Brew On Quay is another good pub that serves great food. Their $10 bowl of wedges is enough for two or, if you’re there with a group, their tasting platter is great and features share-sized portions from their main menu.
If Ponsonby is more your scene, then don’t worry, this suburb doesn’t disappoint for pub grub either. The Longroom and Chapel Bar & Bistro are great for a catch up with friends over a couple of pints and some decent food.
