A winter inspired port wine, plum and apple pie has taken the number one spot in the Bakel’s New Zealand Supreme Pie Awards.
The fruit pie – created by husband and wife team Shane and Kathy Kearns of Viands Bakery in Te Awamutu – beat more than 4,000 entries to take the supreme award. It was only the second time in the 15-year history of the awards that the top prize has not been won by a savoury pie.
The Kearns’s winning pie was truly a team effort; Kathy Kearns came up with the idea in the middle of the night and her husband made the pastry baked it and created the floral design on the crust. Shane and Kathy also won the Gourmet Fruit category.
In addition to port, plum and apple, the pie contains cinnamon, orange zest, juice and vanilla paste
David Liem of Greenland Bakery and Café in Botany won the Gourmet Meat award.
