It can be difficult to find great Sushi these days, and most of us end up settling for second rate dishes, but what if we told you there were some super scrumptious Japanese restaurants all over New Zealand, and that you were missing out?! Here are some of the nation’s favourite Japanese restaurants and cafes…
Shima, Bay of Plenty
For fresh, tasty and affordable Japanese food head to The Bay of Plenty’s Shima. You’ll have the choice between healthy Japanese salads, fresh sushi, and for those chilly autumn days there are plenty of hot authentic Japanese dishes to choose from!
Soto Japanese Garden Restaurant, Auckland
For excellent Japanese fusion there’s no better restaurant than Soto Japanese Garden. The entire dining experience is authentic, from taking off your shoes, to enjoying fine sake and atmosphere. A must if you’re in Auckland!
Sake bar 601, Auckland
This intimate but trendy Japanese has a wonderfully laid back vibe, serves the most exquisite dishes, and has an extensive sake list. Sake Bar 601 is a popular local haunt so if you’re planning on trying this one out some time soon you might want to book ahead to avoid disappointment.
Kazu Japanese Restaurant, Wellington
One of wellington’s finest Japanese restaurants comes in the form of Kazu Japanese. Great for catching up with friends or for a quick bite to eat on the go, this authentic restaurant serves an array of western and traditional dishes such as King Salmon Sushami, Teriyaki Teppan and yummy noodle soups.
Miyabi Sushi Japanese Café, Wellington
For truly Japanese cuisine Miyabyi is the place to go. They deliver top quality traditional cuisine in a friendly environment. Don’t expect any kind of westernised dishes at this Wellington favourite, just close your eyes and imagined you’re in Japan!
If you’re journeying down South past Lake Tekapo you might want to stop off at Kohan Restaurant. The Tempura dishes are classically simple and great with a miso soup on the side. Their bento boxes are also great value for money, and make for fantastic refuelling food!
Tokyo House, Dunedin
In fine Japanese tradition, this intimate restaurant provides classic Sushi dishes freshly made to order. Be warned, the best way to experience the delights of Tokyo House is to get your food to go as it can get pretty cramped!
Savory Japan, Dunedin
For those of you on a budget Savory Japan will hit the spot! It’s atmospheric, cheap and full of scrumptious authentic dishes. Often frequented by students due to it’s youthful vibe and great prices.
If you have a favourite haunt and it’s not covered here, simply let us know… Recommend it!
