We kiwis have a great reputation here and overseas for excellent gourmet burgers with tasty adventurous flavour combinations – and who doesn't love a gourmet burger?
What's not to love? You've got meat – or a vegetarian patty if you're that way inclined – salad and sauce. All the ingredients you need for a great feed.
So go on, treat yourself to a fat gourmet burger, bulging with good things and grab some fries and aioli while you're at it!
Here's a brief guide to some of the country's best gourmet burger joints.
Burger Fuel, Nationwide
As far as chains go, Burger Fuel is fantastic. Its attitude and service is second to none and the burgers are always filled to the brim with delicious natural ingredients.
Murder Burger, Auckland
Full of attitude and a great atmosphere, Murder Burger provides entertainment as well as great burgers – all for under $20! Don’t believe me? Check out their quirky uniforms, funny ad campaigns and website.
Burger Wisconsin, Nationwide
Burger Wisconsin is trying its very best to ensure its burgers are as healthy as they can be whilst still tasting great. These new and healthy options are available as part of the original menu, which includes the Burger Wisconsin classic Venison and Otago Plum. Great burgers for the adventurous diner.
The Fox & Ferret, Christchurch
Typically one-eyed Cantabrians would swear their burgers are the best in the land – and they mightn't be far off. The Fox Burger at The Fox & Ferret in Riccarton and The Palms boasts a 250g beef patty, streaky bacon and a fried egg, not to mention enough salad and sauce to mask the fact that what you're eating is not terribly healthy at all.
Fergburger, Queenstown
Fergburger is the burger joint to top all burger joints. Ferg’s burgers are so big and delicious it’s difficult to walk past without buying one. From the Southern Swine to the Cockadoodle Oink you’ll be spoilt for choice. When you fall in love with Fergburger (as everyone does) you can even buy merchandise to spread the word!
Velvet Burgers, Dunedin and Auckland
Proud of its Captain Cook roots, Velvet Burger's burgers all use the special velvet relish discovered in the Captain’s very own recipe book. And it must be what keeps the residents of Dunedin coming back for more. And it's so good that Velvet Burger has set up shop in Auckland.
